Navigating the world of fitness can sometimes feel like stepping into a foreign language. With so many terms and phrases thrown around, it’s easy to feel lost or intimidated. In this post, we’ll break down some common fitness jargon, so you can feel more confident in your journey toward strength and wellness.

1. Reps and Sets
“Reps” refer to the number of times you perform a specific exercise, while “sets”
indicate how many times you complete a group of reps. For example, doing 10 squats (reps) in a row before taking a break is one set. Understanding this terminology can help you structure your workouts more effectively.
2. HIIT (High-Intensity Interval Training)
HIIT is a training style that alternates short bursts of intense activity with rest or lower-intensity exercise. It’s an efficient way to burn calories and improve cardiovascular fitness in a shorter time frame. A common HIIT workout might involve 30 seconds of sprinting followed by a minute of walking, repeated several times.
3. Core
When you hear “core,” think beyond just abs. Your core includes all the muscles in your torso that stabilize your body, including the back, hips, and pelvis. Strengthening your core can improve your overall stability and performance in various exercises.
4. DOMS (Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness)
DOMS refers to the muscle soreness that often occurs after intense or unfamiliar workouts, typically peaking 24 to 48 hours post-exercise. While it can be uncomfortable, it’s a sign that your muscles are adapting and getting stronger.

5. Cross-Training
Cross-training involves engaging in different types of exercises or sports to improve overall performance and reduce the risk of injury. For example, if you primarily run, adding cycling or strength training to your routine can enhance your fitness and give your body a break from repetitive motion.
6. Progressive Overload
Progressive overload is the gradual increase of stress placed upon the body during exercise training. This can be achieved by increasing weight, reps, or workout intensity. It’s essential for muscle growth and improving strength over time.
7. Active Recovery
Active recovery refers to low-intensity exercise performed after intense workouts or on rest days. Activities like walking, yoga, or light stretching can help promote blood flow and reduce muscle stiffness, aiding recovery.

8. Nutrition Terms: Macronutrients and Micronutrients
Macronutrients include carbohydrates, proteins, and fats, which are essential for energy and body functions. Micronutrients, on the other hand, include vitamins and minerals needed in smaller amounts but are vital for overall health. Understanding these terms can guide you in making balanced nutrition choices.
